At 14, I thought energy was something you either had or you didn’t. Some people were wired, some weren’t. I wasn’t.
I was tired a lot. Unfocused. I assumed that was just me. Turns out, it was almost entirely inputs — what I was eating, how I was sleeping, and whether I was breathing correctly. Nobody told me any of this. I had to find it out backwards, in my twenties, by fixing things that were broken.
Here’s what I’d tell myself.
Sleep is not optional
Not “sleep is important” — that’s too soft. Sleep is the single highest-leverage intervention available to a human body. More than any supplement, any workout protocol, any hack. Getting 8 hours of quality sleep consistently will do more for your focus, mood, and performance than anything else on this list.
The hard part: it’s boring. It doesn’t feel like you’re doing anything. You just go to bed earlier.
Food is fuel, not comfort
This one took me the longest to really accept. I used food as a reward, as entertainment, as a way to manage emotional states. It works, short term. Long term, it’s running your engine on the wrong fuel and wondering why it knocks.
I’m not a diet extremist. But I notice when I eat garbage, I think like garbage. When I eat clean for two weeks, my thinking gets sharper, my mornings get easier, and I need less caffeine to function. That’s data.
Breathwork is real
I came to breathwork skeptically. It sounded like wellness theater.
It isn’t.
Deliberate breathing — Wim Hof rounds, box breathing, even just 10 slow breaths before a hard conversation — changes your physiological state faster than almost anything else. You can take yourself from scattered to sharp in three minutes. That’s not a metaphor. The CO2 tolerance training alone changed how I handle stress.
The thing I actually wish I’d known
Energy isn’t a fixed trait. It’s a skill. It responds to inputs. You can build it.
If you feel tired and foggy and like you’re running on empty all the time, you probably are — but it’s fixable. The inputs are mostly free. Sleep. Food. Air. These aren’t secrets. They just require treating your body like something worth maintaining.
Start with the breathing. It’s the fastest feedback loop.
